Olay® Regenerist™ Overview

The Olay® website often refers to the ingredients in their Regenerist™ line, making statements about their effectiveness and sometimes about their uniqueness to Olay® products. The Regenerist™ line does include some ingredients worth noting such as Aquacurrent™, a component of the Mousse Cleanser that channels water underneath the skin's surface. But there are a number of other ingredients that seem to either produce a minor effect, a few that may even detriment your skin. Our question is this: can the sum total of the ingredients in each Regenerist product lead to the regeneration Olay® promises?

Ingredients at a Glance

Olay® Regenerist™ key ingredients include amino-peptides, pentapeptides, vitamin B, polyethylene, parabens, tocopheryl acetate, fruit extracts, Pal-KTTKS, and allantoin.

Ingredients in Focus

Pentapeptides are one of the featured ingredients in the Regenerist™ line, mentioned in a few Regenerist™ advertisements key to these formulas. In fact, peptides are essential for health in general but particularly for the skin. When peptides are lost the skin loses its ability to produce collagen. By replenishing peptides you can encourage your skin to make its own collagen once more. The best peptide complex we know of is Matrixyl 3000.

The moisturizers in Regenerist™ products include tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) and allantoin. Vitamin E nourishes skin while allantoin pulls water into the skin. Though both may enhance your face, nothing will work quite as well as Hyaluronic Acid when it comes to hydration. Hyaluron has a composition similar to the skin's natural moisture, making it an optimal moisturizer.

Ingredients such as polyethylene and parabens are used as stabilizers and preservatives in skin care products. Though chosen for their affordability, we are surprised a company like Olay® doesn't bypass the cost considering both ingredients are potential carcinogens.

Positives

Includes vitamins B and E, both of which are essential for healthy skin

More affordable and widely available than some skin care lines

Negatives

Uses moisturizers such as vitamin E and allantoin in place of Hyaluronic Acid

Contains only a few of the peptides in Matrixyl 3000, a collagen replenishment ingredient

Does not seem to contain any ingredient that addresses wrinkles directly (such as Argireline)

Final Thoughts

In the end, it seems Regenerist™ ingredients are not particularly unique or effective. You may, in a sense, get what you pay for in this instance. Olay® may have opted for less expensive and less valuable components—while this makes Regenerist™ products more affordable, it also leaves them lacking in a few areas. Fortunately, there are skin care formulas that contain quality ingredients like Argireline and Hyaluronic Acid yet still fall within an affordable price range. In our opinion, achieving beautiful, youthful, healthy skin is certainly worth the cost of quality ingredients.
